When to plant onions, from plants in Texas
Table 8 is statewide and is written as weeks before or after the frost-free date (spring) and the first freeze date (fall). It is not a single calendar date for every Texas city.
Source: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Texas Home Vegetable Gardening Guide, retrieved 2026-10-10.
What the guide prints
Spring: 4 to 10 weeks before. AgriLife calls the spring reference the frost-free date. This site applies the offset to the NOAA median (50%) last 32°F date because the guide does not name a probability level.
The fall column for this crop is marked not recommended.
Days to harvest in the same guide: 80-120. Days to harvest from AgriLife Table 9, Onion (bulb), 80–120. The weeks on this page are Table 8, Onion (plants): 4 to 10 weeks before the frost-free date in spring, and not recommended in fall. Table 8’s Onion (seed) row is a different window, 6 to 8 weeks before in spring and 8 to 10 weeks before in fall, with Table 9 days of 90–120. The table does not say whether the bulb count starts at seeding or transplanting.
Same weeks, different stations
These cities use their own median 32°F dates. The week offsets are unchanged.
